Frequently Asked Questions

When is Camp offered?
Camp is offered daily during summer and winter school breaks on Maui. The next summer sessions begin Mondays the weeks of June 8-July 24, 2009. The next winter session is December 21, 2009- January 8, 2010. No camp is operated on Christmas or New Years Day.

Do I have to register for all sessions?
No. You can register by the week or by the day (space available) A space is held when payment is given. Call (808) 249-8811 ext 1.

Who can go to camp? What are the ages?
Ocean Discovery Camp for Kids is opened to children entering or enrolled in grades 1-5. Sun, Surf and Service is our Ocean Camp for Middle School and is open to kids entering or enrolled in grades 6-8.

What time is drop off and pick-up?
Drop off is at 8:30 am. Pick up is at 4:00 pm daily. Parents may pre-register (IN ADVANCE) for extended care with an early drop-off at 8:00 am or a late pick-up by 5:00 pm. In all other cases, parents who do not collect their child by 4:00 will be assessed a fee.

What is included in the price?
A whole lot of fun! Camp tuition, field trip fees (whalewatch, surf, windsurf, hikes, transportation to filed trip sites), two snacks per day.

Do you provide lunch?
Lunch is NOT included and must be provided by parents. Several restaurants here in Ma'alaea make lunch options available for purchase. You can view sample menus at the Ocean Camp for Kids webpage, click on view lunch purchase options.

What does the camper need to bring each day?
Campers need a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, refillable water bottle, lunch, and a booster seat if it is required for them.

Where is the camp? What is the Classroom like?
Ocean Camp for Kids is based in the air-conditioned classrooms of the Ocean Science Center next to Maui Ocean Center overlooking Ma'alaea Harbor. Our classrooms are equipped with AV equipment, computer, lab equipment, and our own private restrooms. Additional activities take place next door at Maui Ocean Center, at Haycraft Beach Park, at the U.S Coast Guard Station. We travel off-site for surfing, windsurfing, tidepool trips, Molokini snorkel and beach day.

What do the campers do all day?
Each day is different and campers select from classroom activities to customize their experience. On a typical day, campers go out on a field trip in the morning and return to the classrooms for lunch. Afternoons may be a combination of science lab, arts and crafts activities, special guest presentations both in and out of the classrooms.

Who teaches the kids? What about safety?
Our counselors are members of the Pacific Whale Foundation education staff. All are over 21 and are college graduates. All of our counselors are CPR/First Aid trained and Lifeguard Certified. Our adult to student ratio is 1:10 or better. Additional adult volunteers provide support for off-site field excursions. All staff are required to show proof of negative TB status. When we are out of the classroom, we carry parent contact info and first-aid supplies with us.
